Light or heavy tones are made according to the pressure of the pencil. In the above diagrams the top portions have been made very dark, gradually toning down very light where only the topmost points on the paper have been touched with the crayon. The crayon illustration shown brings out half-tone qualities not possible with pen work. Drawings made in this medium are generally not over twice the size of their reproduction. With a finer grained paper the reduction should be less, for in reproduction many smaller dots and strokes are lost.

There are many styles of technique and ways of finishing a drawing, some which can be more properly classed as tricks and “stunts.” “Spatterwork” where the only extra equipment needed is an old tooth-brush, a pen-knife and some tracing paper, is an interesting “stunt” technique. The above diagrams show the procedure, beginning with making the stencil, which is either of tracing paper or very light cardboard. The parts of the drawing not to be spattered should be carefully covered, with the edges of the stencil held firmly in place by pins or weights to prevent curling.
